The present dissertation intends to find a viable solution of rehabilitation for the interior space of a building located in Alfama, taking into consideration the local identity and memory. The study consists of an analysis of rehabilitation and the associated to it, focusing on the rehabilitation in historical areas and the role that interior design can have in the process. The theme of rehabilitation in the city of Lisbon is approached, from the way it has been evolving, to the programs and strategies set by the government as a way of supporting the process. Case studies of rehabilitation projects in Lisbon are analysed, as a way of finding the main challenged and recurring errors, mainly in regards to the building's identity and how na inadequate rehabilitation can have a negative impact on the local identity. Taking into account the errors presented in the case studies, it is checked what is needed to go against them. The tourist accommodation is approached as a way to bring into context contemporary tourism and its relation to culture. Not only the variants of tourism that are found in the current days are approached in this study, but also the different accommodation typologies, focused on how they are presented in Portugal. The impact that tourism has on historical areas is analysed, and its relation to rehabilitation is taken as a possible booster to culture and local economy. The dissertation culminates to a proposal of an intervention in a building that is in na advanced state of degradation, located in Alfama, and which usage will be changed from domestic to a hotel. The project is carried out as a way of incorporating portuguese identity in the space, as a way of respecting the building's history and the history of the neighborhood where it is located.
