É feito o enquadramento da Geologia regional e do troço em estudo, com a análise das formações geológicas e das principais fraturas, procurando perceber a evolução da Bacia. É feita uma análise relativa à subida do nível da base do mar nos últimos milénios devido ao degelo após a erosão das últimas glaciações, sendo que solos aluvionares e a geologia da zona em estudo também condicionaram o enchimento aluvionar do vale do Mondego em Coimbra.Estes depósitos aluvionares resultam da acumulação de materiais associados à dinâmica fluvial, correspondendo a depósitos terrígenos com estruturação interna, o que traduz uma evolução no leito aluvial do rio Mondego. São constituídos essencialmente por areias no topo e por areias com seixos e calhaus na base, com intercalações lenticulares de lodos e argilas menos significativas. Serão referidos alguns métodos e técnicas de prospeção, privilegiando as que foram utilizadas nos estudos que serviram de base aos elementos apresentados para a caracterização das zonas aluvionares apresentadas neste trabalho.Foram analisados vários relatórios de trabalhos de prospeção realizados nas margens e no vale do rio Mondego, entre a Ponte Açude e a Ponte Rainha Santa Isabel, incluindo sondagens e ensaios de laboratório, procurando-se entender as características e as propriedades do vale e das suas margens. Apresentam-se propostas de soluções para o atual estado dos muros de suporte nas margens, alguns dos quais serão brevemente sujeitos a obras de estabilização e requalificação. Por fim são apresentadas as conclusões do trabalho, abordando as características geológicas da zona e avaliadas as possíveis situações de instabilidade.Os problemas associados às margens do rio estão relacionados com a fraca capacidade de suporte dos solos aluvionares da fundação, constituídos por areias, lodos e cascalheira. As obras existentes ou a realizar no vale do Mondego e nas suas margens beneficiarão muito do conhecimento aprofundado das características dos sedimentos aluvionares e da sua distribuição espacial.The aim of the present work is to characterize the alluvial soils of the Mondego river in the section between the Bridge-Weir and the Rainha Santa Isabel bridge in Coimbra, in order to contribute to a better knowledge of the characteristics and distribution of the alluvial soils with reference to the works carried out or to be done in the river, including the requalification of the margins of the Mondego river. This dissertation begins with an introduction to the study area (Coimbra) followed by the objectives of the work, including the description of the Mondego valley and it´s margins and of the geological and geotechnical characterization of the alluvial soils. The framework of the regional geology and of section under study is presented, including the analysis of the geological formations and of the mains fractures, trying to perceive the evolution of the Basin. An analysis is made of the sea level rise in the last millennia due to the thawing, after the erosion of the last glaciations, as the alluvial soils and the geology of the area also conditioned the alluvial sedimentation of the Mondego valley at Coimbra.These alluvial deposits resulted from the accumulation of materials associated with the river dynamics, which corresponds to coarse deposits with internal structuring, promoting the evolution of the alluvial river bed of the Mondego. These deposits consist mainly of sands at the top and sand with pebbles at the base, presenting lenticular intercalations of mud and of smaller amount of clays.A few site investigation methods and techniques will be mentioned, favoring those that were used in the studies that served as a basis for the characterization of the alluvial zones presented in this work.Several site investigation reports work performed on the margins and in the Mondego river valley were analyzed, between the Bridge-Weir and the Rainha Santa Isabel Bridge, including soundings and laboratory tests, trying to understand the characteristics and properties of the valley and its margins. Proposals for solutions of the current state of the retaining walls in the margins are presented, some of which will soon be submited to stabilization and requalification works.Finally, the conclusions of the study are presented, addressing the geological characteristics of the zone and evaluating the possible situations of instability.The problems associated with the river margins are related to the low bearing capacity of alluvial soils in the foundation, consisting of sands, mud and gravel.
