Resumo: Within the framework of Historical Pragmatics, the author attempts to detect, in medieval discourse of different types, the way in which «old age» is viewed, how behaviour and social interaction are governed in relation to this age group and in what ways the group itself is characterised or defined. The author concludes that two principal perspectives of old age are to be found in these texts: on the one hand, the fragility of the old as the result of physical attrition; on the other hand, the recognition of wisdom and experience. In the medieval texts analysed, old age appears to be viewed from the dialectics of corporeal fragility and force of spirit.
