Resumo: Introduction: High-risk pregnancy is a multidimensional phenomenon that requires an understanding of the meanings attributed by women to their health needs, as well as the actions and resources of services regarding their experience of bearing a child at risk. Objectives: through the research question, what is the meaning given by women with high-risk pregnancies to their health needs and nursing care practices received during the prenatal period? Our general objective was to understand the meaning given by those with high-risk pregnancies to their health needs and to the nursing team's care practices received during the prenatal period. Methods: qualitative study of 10 high-risk pregnant women who attended the prenatal service at Centro de Saúde da Fazenda, Cape Verde. For data analysis, we used Laurence Bardin's analysis methods. Results: the main findings of this study reveal that high-risk pregnancy entails a set of physical, psychological, social and emotional changes for women that often cause ambivalence of feelings connoted as fear and insecurity of an unfavorable outcome, but also as joy and hope for women. Conclusions. This study is expected to contribute to the Nursing class in Cape Verde in terms of maternal health in this target group. Information that can serve as a basis for broader nursing care that responds to the multidimensional needs experienced by high-risk pregnant women is punctuated here.
