Resumo: Objective: To identify the feelings of suffering experienced by women who work in the cutting of sugar cane. Method: This is a descriptive and exploratory study, with qualitative approach, which made use of Oral History as a research method and of Content Analysis for speeches. Ten sugar cane cutters were interviewed in the year 2011. Results: Five thematic categories were identified: suffering from activities developed during work, due to excessive working hours, children, loss of relatives and factors related to violence. Conclusion: It can be said that women who work in the cutting of sugar cane reflect aspects of complex and comprehensive context and the feelings of suffering are present in working situations and outside them, thereby confirming that there is a tight relationship between private life and work, in other words, one reflects the other.
