Resumo: The terrestrial surface representation in maps is an important factor in the societys development, increasing the visualization capacity and decision making of the geographic space. The classic representation of the geographic objects was made in general in two dimensions, presenting some difficulties in terms of understanding and legibility of the thematic contents. For this reason a dynamic digital geographic system as the Geographic Information System (GIS) have an important role in the resolution of these problems increasing the visualization capacity and extending decision making significantly. Thus GIS assumes a high importance in monitoring and forecast tasks, in special in very dynamic coastal zones. They allow storage, integration, manipulation and analysis of different data types, to render possible the quantification of risk and vulnerability pointers. The main goal of this paper is to present practical examples carried out in the coastal zone, using GIS tools. Thus the five applications that will be presented are the following: bottom morphology analysis in the Leixões harbour, Aguda detached breakwater design, coastline evolution between Espinho and Ovar municipalities, retreated artificial sand dune in the Centre Region and Costa da Caparica groins field rehabilitation and artificial sand nourishment.
