This dissertation, as a complement to the academic path, aims to make sense of how to intervene in pre-existing buildings. In this way, trying to acquire and consolidate knowledge that makes a more conscious and informed look to the act of designing with the pre-existing, culminating in the practical exercise of an intervention project. It addresses the factory A Tabaqueira, a building complex which integrates Marvila's people collective memory, represents the industrial age and is, nowadays, abandon and forgotten. It is from its inherent complexity, that all the issues addressed arise throughout the process, as well as the resulting premises, which define the intervention. Between the past, the present and the future, in a city in transformation, an exercise is proposed that aims the city's sustainability and continuity, as well as the safeguarding and enhancement of the factory complex and associated identities and memories. It was intended to establish a narrative that mirrored the design process, from the choice of the building and the program, and the notions that support the project options, to the conception of spaces. It is from the circumstances, through the reflections and finishing in the intervention that this dissertation unfolds.
