Resumo: Objectives: Determine the influence of parental styles in anthropometric characteristics and nutritional intake of children. Methods:Cross-sectional study with a sample of 67 male children from a football school, aged between 5 and 12 years old, and their mothers. We carried out anthropometric measurements (weight, height, skinfold thickness, waist circumference) and assessed dietary intake (24-hour dietary recall) of children. BMI was calculated and the cutoff percentiles used to classify the nutritional status of children were those recommended by CDC. Body fat percentage was calculated using prediction equations of Weststrate e Deurenberg. Mothers completed sociodemographic, clinical and life style questionnaire. Parenting styles were determined by evaluating two dimensions: demandingness and responsiveness. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. Results: The prevalence of overweight children was 16,9%, including 10,5% obese. About 46%, 33%, 13% and 8% of mothers were categorized in authoritative parenting style, neglectful, indulgent, authoritarian, respectively. Parenting styles were not associated neither with nutritional intake nor anthropometric parameters of children. Sons of authoritarian mothers showed a higher percentage of total energy intake from fat and lower from carbohydrates compared to the children of neglectful mothers (p <0.05). Conclusion: Results suggest that parental educational styles do not influence the adequacy of nutritional intake or anthropometric parameters in children who practice a extracurricular sport.
