The present dissertation is a counterpart of the academic study-path and gained experience. It aims to develop a scaffolding for a sustainable development of the touristic sector in the Dolomites, Italy, while picking up and integrating also social and cultural aspects into the design process of the project. The frame for the sustainable touristic development was established around the pre-existing building complex of former army barracks located at the town-entrance of Innichen San Candido (Italy). This work intends to revalue and redevelop the pre-existing building complex and to provide it with a new and alternative utilization. In the dissertation a narrative leading the reader through the different developmental milestones of the design process is established. Starting with a touristic and territorial analysis of the research area, the reader is guided through the new program of the area towards the heart of this thesis: rigorous, sketched/outlined, three-dimensional depictions, which convey the architectural components of the established project. After the excursion through the detailed heart of this thesis, the reader is presented with textual fragments surrounding various topics which arose during the project development. These textual fragments help the reader to understand and reflect upon the decisions made during the design process. A project which reappraises the past and designs in the present for a sustainable future.
