Introduction: Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by excessively high-performance standards and overly critical self-judgments. Both self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism have been associated with eating psychopathology, constituting a risk and maintenance factor for the development of eating disorders. Thus, cognitions about pursuit of perfection are present in individuals with eating psychopathology. Perseverative thinking, conceptualized as a cognitive process constituted by repetitive, intrusive and relatively uncontrolled cognitions focused on one's own negative problems or experiences, has also been associated with eating psychopathology. Objectives: This study examined the mediating role of the pursuit of perfection and perseverative thinking in the relationship between perfectionism and eating psychopathology, controlling for occupation (students and workers). Methods: A total of 112 female subjects from the community (81 students and 31 workers) completed self-report questionnaires measuring perfectionism, pursuit of perfection, perseverative thinking and eating psychopathology. Results: Results shown that the impact of self-oriented perfectionism on eating psychopathology is mediated by the pursuit of perfection and perseverative thinking, while the impact of socially prescribed perfectionism on eating psychopathology is mediated only by the pursuit of perfection. Discussion and Conclusions: It seems that to cope with higher pursuit of perfection thoughts, individuals with higher self-oriented perfectionism tend to use perseverative cognitive strategies, leading to eating psychopathology. On the other hand, individuals with higher socially prescribed perfectionism tend to not engage on this type of maladaptive strategies, which suggests that for these individuals, pursuit of perfection thoughts are more pervasive in eating psychopathology. Thus, the pursuit of perfection and perseverative thinking can constitute relevant intervention targets for the prevention and treatment of eating psychopathology.2020-03-19info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesishttp://hdl.handle.net/10316/97833http://hdl.handle.net/10316/97833TID:202712605porRodrigues, Marina Pereirainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2022-05-25T09:46:48Zoai:estudogeral.uc.pt:10316/97833Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-19T21:15:46.971746Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
