Resumo: This work intends to contribute to the urgently required reflection on state-provided housing. It is, as such, essential to explore past and present strategies implemented as a way to pursue new approaches to housing that are adjusted to a world in constant change and, in particular, to the social reality of the Portuguese population. In decisive moments in History, architecture has been able to respond - both in theory and practice - to the various needs of society. Sustained by human development, it has always distinguished itself through the conception of city and housing in what is a substantial part of architecture's genetic code. There are current new demands to which housing must respond. In the previous decades, accentuated social, labour and technological transformations occurred, leading to new challenges and a constant evolution of the house. Emerging lifestyles and proposed housing models are greatly dissociated for various motives, ranging from the scarce resources made available for production to the need to respond to diverse inhabitants in anticipation of the significant social, family and work transformations over time. Past examples of social housing are diverse and often marked by specific movements in architecture or by relevant, impactful historical events that account for social development. Today we encounter great social challenges and are able to look at social housing as a bonding, inclusive project able to promote the improvement of the quality of housing in Portugal. My intent with this dissertation is, thus, to reflect on policies of social housing, in broadband, considering the diverse physical degrees of housing, from housing unit to neighbourhood, and the essential aspects linked to the establishing of urban continuities. It is my belief that the new generation of architects must give special attention to these policies by offering a valid response to the yearnings and demands of 21st century society.
