Resumo: Most of us will experience pain during our lives. Although it has been considered of little importance, we are now recognising pain as a major public health issue. Cancer pain, due to the obvious rising incidence of cancer, is a well-known problem of all those who deal with these patients. While effective pain management for individual patients is obviouslyimportant, improving pain management generally will require the implementation ofinstitutionwide quality management programs, changing laws and regulatory practice and convincing administrators and the general public that pain management is important and merits support.

Apesar de ter sido considerada, em tempos, de menor importância,hoje é-lhe atribuída uma dimensão importante enquanto problema de Saúde Pública. A dor oncológica, pela dimensão que o cancro tem vindo a tomar, assume, neste contexto,particular relevo. Persistem, no entanto, numerosos obstáculos à sua correcta valorização e tratamento. A aplicação de normas estritamente burocráticas não parece ser suficiente para a finalidade a que se propõem: reconhecer que a dor não é uma fatalidade, e que com medidas simples se pode conseguir um controlo razoável.
