Resumo: | The main goal of this study is to investigate the contribution of the Italian architect Aldo Rossi (1931-1997), one of the most influential and controversial architects in the second half of the twentieth century. The analysis of his theoretical constructions is taken under the comprehension and interpretation of two precise formulations - Exalted Rationalism and Theory of Project. This study proposes to describe and analyse them under the particular circumstance of the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century, as part of a disciplinary crisis. Therefore, investigating Aldo Rossi means not only a contribution to the understanding of the issues and ideological systems that support this critical framework, but also a hypothesis of examining the performance of an architect dealing with the collapse of discipline. Essentially, it attempts to analyse how A. Rossi deals with the collective, objective and transmissible idea of Project in coexistence with the notion of Crisis, precisely when the discipline affirmativiness does not seem feasible. Moreover, it seeks to understand in what way the effort of universality in A. Rossi matches the concept of Theory of Project as Autobiography. In order to do that, we take mapping, intrigue and speculation as experimental tools involving internal references to other ones, wither declared or suspected, that help define the formulations of A. Rossi. Divided into four parts, this work makes use of different registers to describe the positions of A. Rossi as an epistemological construction of Project. In the introductory chapter - Contradiction and Legitimacy - it is proposed a set-up of the main problems related to the idea of Theory of Project and to how it is evaluated in the crisis situation of the second half of the twentieth century. The second chapter aims to establish itself as a critical mapping over four problematical axes concerning controversy. The third one takes form on the exercise of recognition, description and composition of what constitutes the particular formulation of Theory of Project in A. Rossi. Finally, as a parallel speech, the last one establishes a confrontation with three works - Teatro del Mondo, Cimitero di San Cataldo, and Teatrino Scientifico - not to seek verifiability, but rather deepening issues and paradoxes, as an affirmation of an idea of Project |
