Resumo: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders and the sixth most associated cause of years lived with disability, characterized by a state of constant and persistent worry and high levels of anxiety and stress, affecting the quality of patients' lives. In addition to being expensive, the first-line treatment of GAD is not very effective, with 60% of patients maintaining residual symptoms. The objective of this review was to gather evidence about the influence of physical exercise and its different types, on the symptomatology and/or prognosis of a population diagnosed with GAD by summarizing the main results of the selected randomized trials and possibly allow the development of protocols on different types of acute and chronic exercise as a prevention strategy and possible treatment for GAD. This review was based on PRISMA guidelines. The bibliographic search included the Cochrane and PubMed databases, and 6 articles were selected. Although it is not possible to draw definitive conclusions, in general, studies have shown positive results in patients with GAD, with significant reductions in their typical symptoms, revealing high efficacy, rapid action and high tolerability. They suggest the possibility of physical exercise, in particular Aerobic Exercise, High intensity interval training (HIIT) and Resistance Exercise Training (RET), as a therapeutic alternative to the treatment of GAD.
