Questionou importantes limites da Sociedade. Ainda é recordada, hoje, como extremamente violenta, em que o limite do domínio ético foi muito desfocado. Diversas áreas de conhecimento mostraram-se fundamentais para a guerra como a engenharia, a matemática e a medicina. Nestas áreas, as apropriações foram lógicas e diretas para os objetivos do conflito, e por isso questionei-me sobre o papel da arquitetura e dos arquitetos. No entanto, ao tentar compreender o enquadramento da Arquitetura durante esses anos, percebi que não foram, de todo, focados na guerra, mas no que aconteceu à margem da mesma. Durante os 6 anos de conflito, a Arquitetura parou, desde construções, publicações, escolas, eventos, até aos CIAM. Existiam novas prioridades no mundo que impediam o contínuo investimento na Arquitetura. No entanto, o exercício não cessou, nem foi substituído pela engenharia. Ao invés, proponho demonstrar como este foi aplicado e desenvolvido durante 6 anos pouco prósperos. Procura-se demonstrar que a Arquitetura Moderna não foi interrompida em 1939, mas utilizada como a ferramenta fundamental que serviu os propósitos da Segunda Guerra, com uma eficiência sem precendentes. Recordando que a evolução arquitetónica nunca ocorre numa direção apenas, é fundamental compreender, também, o benifício das novas tecnologias, desenvolvidas durante o conflito, para a reconstrução pós-guerra e todas as suas necessidades pacíficas.The Second World War is thought to be the most overall of History, a total war. It questioned very important Society’s limits. It is still remembered as extremely violent, in which the limit of the ethical domain was very blurred.Several areas of knowledge have proved fundamental to warfare such as engineering, mathematics, and medicine. In these areas, appropriations were logical and direct to the objectives of the conflict, and so I wondered about the role of architecture and architects. However, trying to understand the framing of Architecture during those years, I realized that they were not at all focused on the war, but on what happened at the sidelines.For six years of conflits, Architecture stopped, from construction, publications, schools, events, even the CIAM. New priorities take place in the world and stop the continuous investment in the field. However, the exercise didn’t stop, nor was it replaced by Engineering. Instead, I intend to demonstrate how it was applied and developed over the course of six very unhealthy and controversial years. I seek to demonstrate that Modern Architecture was not interrupted in 1939, but used as the fundamental tool that served the purposes of World War II with unprecedented efficiency and elegance, intelligence and speed.
