Knowledge Organization Systems are important tools when it comes to, as the name refers, the organization of knowledge so that it is possible to retrieve and reuse it. This is even more essential in the context of organizations whose purpose is to safeguard and make available documents, such as libraries. In these knowledge sharing sites, it is important to ensure that their users can not only access documents that meet their informational needs, but also discover new items that can help them. This is where the particularity of indexing and authority control comes in, especially in domains of knowledge with sets of terms specific to them, as seen in the areas of art and architecture. This dissertation studies not only the knowledge organization systems in the architectural and artistic domain, but its application in the context of the digital library collection of the 'Fundação Instituto Arquiteto José Marques da Silva'. In addition to this, an authority control support manual focused on selected terms from a SOC present at the Foundation was also developed. Taking into account the specificity of the terminology used, not only internally at the Foundation, but also by the users who turn to it to obtain the information they are looking for, a set of indications should be followed that encompass terminological particularities, not only those of the knowledge domains. in which they are inserted, but also from the Portuguese language. For this, we resorted not only to the study of a reference art and architecture SOC, but also to two publications focused on the control of authority, one national and the other international.
