O nosso modesto contributo para a problemática da velhice partirá da obra édita de Saramago, destacando os efeitos da passagem do tempo sobre o indivíduo, desde as manifestações físicas até às alterações decorrentes do estado psicológico que condicionam o comportamento daqueles que, diariamente, se olham ao espelho e facilmente se apercebem de que algo está a mudar. Acreditamos, deste modo, sermos capazes de, com rigor, traçar um retrato completo das manifestações da velhice filtradas pelo olhar sempre atento de Saramago. Ao analisarmos pormenorizadamente os textos saramaguianos, facilmente nos apercebemos de uma visão original do conceito de velhice: onde os outros veem tristeza e desânimo, o escritor vislumbra novas aprendizagens, projetos de vida, relacionamentos intensos e uma criatividade excecional. Cumpre-nos, por conseguinte, fazer prova de que o idoso deverá ser entendido como um indivíduo em desenvolvimento e esta evolução não tem de ser sempre negativa. Tudo se resume, afinal, a uma noção de perspetiva acerca do mundo e do que nele ocorre. Consequentemente, deparamos com indivíduos (reais ou ficcionais) que, afastados do mundo por diversos motivos, se sentem à deriva, acabando, assim, por antecipar a morte. No sentido inverso, não podemos deixar de assinalar muitas outras pessoas que não esmorecem e conseguem debelar o impacto negativo que o envelhecimento normalmente pressupõe. Encontramos, deste modo, indivíduos que continuam a sentir-se úteis, que conseguem potenciar os conhecimentos adquiridos ao longo da vida, transmitindo-os aos mais novos, com uma sabedoria ímpar, que não se aprende na escola. Neste sentido, parece-nos lícito afirmar que o retrato que do idoso é feito pelo escritor coincide com um indivíduo experiente, dotado de uma calma que advém do profundo conhecimento do mundo. Marcado fisicamente pela passagem do tempo, não exibe qualquer sinal de beleza que cative os outros. Porém, mesmo alquebrado pela doença, ou desamparado pela sociedade que o vê como um fardo, o idoso terá motivos para se orgulhar da vida que levou e do seu contributo para o desenvolvimento da sociedade e para a educação das gerações mais novas. The undeniable relevance of studies on old age today is related to the fact that in recente decades sociodemographic Evolution has demanded that more through research be carried out on the so-called second Half of human life. Our modest contribution to the problem of old age will come from Saramago’s published work, highliting the effects of the passage of time on the individual, from physical manifestations to the changes resulting from the psychological state that condition the behavior of those who, daily, look at the mirror and easily notice that something is changing. In this way, we believe that we are be able of accurately drawing a complete Picture of the manifestations of old age filtered by Saramago’s Always attentive eye. When analyzing Saramago’s texts in detail, we easily perceive an original of old age: Where others see sadness and discouragement, the writer envisions new learning, life projects, intense relationships and exceptional creativity. Therefore, we must prove that the elderly should be understood as a developing individual and this Evolution does not Always have to be negative. It all boils down, after all, to a notion of perspective about the world and whathappens in it. Consequently, we come across individuals (real or fictional) who, removed from the world for several reasons, feel adrift, thus ending up anticipating death. On the Other hand, we cannot fail to point out many Other people who do not give up and manage to overcome the negative impact that aging normally entails. In this way, we fing individuals who continue to feel useful, who manage to enhance the knowledge acquired throughout life, transmitting it to the younger ones, with a unique wisdom, which is not learned in school. In this sense, it seems fair to say that the writer’s Portrait of the elderly coincides with a deep knowledge of the world. Physically marked by the passage of time, it does not display any signo f beauty that captivates others. However, even broken by illness, or abandoned by Society that sees it as a burden, the elder.
