Resumo: The following dissertation aims to study the evolution of the contemporary necropolis. Using David Chipperfield's intervention on San Michele in Isola cemetery - winner of the expansion competition in Venice's cemetery - as object of study, it's intended to demonstrate the architects importance as a key element on the thinking transformation and approach to the subject of death. At first we performed a research on the modifications of the space of death throughout history in an attempt to address their most significant moments. This summary should allow a better understanding of the development of the thought of death and the evolution of cemeteries in the urban context. Following, we studied three examples of funerary architecture we consider extraordinary, based on the concepts of "Garden" in Père-Lachaise, "Landscape" in Finisterre and "Architecture" in San Cataldo. This observation is based on the need of understanding the differences between them and in which way the convergence of their characteristics leads to the formation of "City". San Michele, according to our thinking, can be considered a representation of "City", as it is an independent equipment, as an island, and contains within itself the three concepts above. David Chipperfields' intervention infers the evolution that brings to the contemporary the distinctly neoclassical space. The study of six other proposals made for the competition lies within the critics field. The comparative analysis of several answers to the same problem lead us to identify different approaches while promoting the development of critical thinking in relation to the funerary architecture. In a final reflection we consider that Chipperfields' project is the one that best responds to the problem, as it promotes the balance between the innovation and the respect for the pre-existence. It is, therefore, up to the architect to promote the evolution of the necropolis and, by association, of the social thought on the subject of death.
