Resumo: The present dissertation proposes an analysis of the residential buildings of the city of Basel, Switzerland, in order to identify and characterize their dominant types, their genesis and transformation processes, as well as the relationships they establish with the form of the city over time. This work is the first to approach housing buildings in Basel from a strictly typological perspective. Therefore, an approach covering the longest possible period of time was chosen in order to identify the processes of continuity and transformation in housing types and models throughout the city's history. The premise for this type-morphological analysis lies on the understanding of the city as architecture - according to the Rossian notion - and that knowledge in Architecture (as a discipline) resides fundamentally in its architectures. The tools for decoding this knowledge are, as such, the tools of the architect's work. Typology is therefore positioned as a possible link between the disciplinary dimension of architecture, as knowledge, and its propositional dimension. According to the view adopted here, buildings cannot be considered for analysis in isolation. They are part of a wider system, the city, and therefore can only be studied as an integral part of a system that is complex and in transformation, which can be studied through its history and morphology. The central theme of the dissertation is framed by an enquiry on the concept of type through what we considered to be its main paradigms and their contexts in history and the theory of Architecture, in order to provide a complex understanding that is intended to be operative for the proposed analysis. The typo-morphological analysis that is central to this dissertation is based on an extensive process of collection and inventory, which is complemented by a second moment that approaches the buildings under study through drawing and photography.
