Resumo: Funding Information: We thank the Dirección General de Cultura y Patrimonio of the Generalitat Valenciana for the authorization to excavate El Salt site. The authors are grateful to the El Salt excavation team for their help with the excavation, sieving and washing of sediment each year. We also thank Dr. Nicholas Conard and the three anonymous reviewers who helped improve the paper. Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Research at El Salt is funded by the Spanish Government project HAR2015-68321-P (MINECO FEDER/UE), PID2019-10711RB-100 (Ministerio de Ciencias, Innovación y Universidades), UV-INV_AE17-708551 (Universitat de València) and Conselleria d’Educació, Investigació, Cultura i Esport from the Valencian government. This investigation was also carried out thanks to the Prometeo Project of the Secretariat for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation from Ecuador and the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain). AF is currently granted with an APOSTD Postdoctoral grant (APOST/2021/110, Generalitat Valenciana) cofinanced by the European Social Fund. VDC is beneficiary of a grant (ZA21-044) for the requalification of the Spanish University System from the Ministry of Universities of the Government of Spain, financed by the European Union, Next Generation EU. Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).El Salt (Middle Palaeolithic; Alcoi, Spain) is a key site for understanding the disappearance of Neanderthals in the eastern Iberian Peninsula, a process that is observed along its stratigraphic sequence. To improve our understanding of the palaeoclimatic context in which this process took place, we applied the UDA-ODA discrimination technique to the fossil herpetological assemblages from Stratigraphic Units (SU) Xb (52.3 ± 4.6 ka) and V (45.2 ± 3.4/44.7 ± 3.4 ka). This method is based in the application of an ecological criterion, the maximum altitude of each species on each Iberian range, to discern and remove those areas that do not meet their ecological requirements (UDA) from those that do (ODA), which are included in its distribution from Atlases from which the common distribution species is going to be extracted. Results indicate the existence of an alternation between “cold and wet” moments with “warm and dry” ones, all of them in a more humid context than nowadays. Climate was slightly warmer than nowadays in SU Xb, whereas was cooler in SU V. Regarding MAP, our results show less variation between SUs than it has been provided by previous studies. These results do not fully agree with those provided by small mammals from the same SUs, which indicate an increase of the temperatures whereas rainfall experienced the contrary. These differences could be related with the wider distribution of the Iberian herpetofauna, and some differences in the applied ecological criterion. Furthermore, herpetofaunal palaeoclimatic reconstruction shows that the abandonment of the site by Neanderthals seems to have occurred during an arid phase.DCT - Departamento de Ciências da TerraGeoBioTec - Geobiociências, Geoengenharias e GeotecnologiasRUNMarquina-Blasco, RafaelFagoaga, AnaCrespo, Vicente D.Bailon, SalvadorMallol, CarolinaHernández, Cristo M.Galván, BertilaBlain, Hugues AlexandreRuiz-Sánchez, Francisco Javier2023-03-16T22:37:38Z2022-072022-07-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/article25application/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/150721engMarquina-Blasco, R., Fagoaga, A., Crespo, V.
