The autors present their recently acquired expe­rience in the management of patients with Human Immunodeficiency Vírus infection (HIV), admitted in an Internal Medicine service of a central hospi­tal. They describe a population of 107 patients with 157 admissions in 7years (1987-1994), theirepide­ miological and clinicai features, as well as some aspects of the diagnosis of the opportunist infecti­ ons and the antivirai therapy. The autors try to assess several stages of the cour­se which every patient goes through from the mo­ment he is admitted at the Hospital until he is dis­charged and returns to the community. The needs of each stage are pointed out and suggestions are made to improve the care of these patients, although it's the autors belief that there's much to be done.
