Resumo: ABSTRACT - Introduction: “Early to bed, early to rise” is built on the assumption that sleeping is inevitable at night and waking up should take place with a sunrise. When we counteract this with shift work, worker’s eating behavior may be affected. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence that shift work has on the diet of shift workers (SW). Methods: A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was delivered to 190 ground SW and to a control group of 40 ground workers who didn’t do shifts. Results: We observed significant differences between SW and control group. Our data confirmed that SW present a hypercaloric and hyperlipidemic diet, with high values of saturated fat, dietary cholesterol, trans fat, and sugar. Conclusion: According to our research it can be established that shift work has impact in worker’s dietary intake, reflecting the need to develop specific nutritional strategies for this working class.

Instituto de Sociologia, Universidade do PortoRCIPLMoreira, CátiaSimões, EuniceGuerreiro, Catarina SousaCarolino, ElisabeteJorge, AnabelaDavid, ElieteMendes, Lino2018-01-18T15:46:42Z2016-122016-12-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10400.21/7944engMoreira C, Simões E, Guerreiro CS, Carolino E, Jorge A, Mendes L, et al.
