Resumo: This study goals intended to relate physical activity and physical fitness with academic achievements in adolescents, along with the comparison of physical activity and physical fitness by gender and also relate the referred variables with the body fat percentage, waist perimeter and body mass index.Sample was composed by 373 teenagers of Portugal northern region aged between 10 and 18 years old (M=13.24, DP=2.44), 209 (56.0%) females and 164 (44.0%) males.Instruments included a questionnaire to assess adolescents' socio-demographic and anthropometric characteristics, an academic evaluation sheet for determining academic achievements, a Tanita's BC 545 weight scale for assessing weight, body mass index and body fat percentage, a portable stadiometer (SECA 217) for assessing height, accelerometers (GT3Xs) for determining physical activity and fitnessgram for assessing physical fitness. Results suggest the existence of a relation between academic achievements and physical activity, especially the vigorous type, and between academic achievements and physical fitness. The average result of the physical activity practice falls short of WHO recommendations (≥ 60min/day). Nevertheless vigorous activities were more frequently engaged by male adolescents, when compared with female adolescents; the same was observed regarding physical fitness. Finally we also found a relation between physical activity, especially the vigorous type, but also the moderate to vigorous type and with lower percentage of body fat, and physical fitness with lower percentage of body fat, lower waist perimeter and lower body mass index.
