Today, public health issues and environment concerns place tight quality control requirements on the water used for human consumption. These can only be met by monitoring networks, and a careful control of the captation, storage and distribution systems. This paper presents the architecture of a remote unit thatworks both as a water quality monitoring system and as aremote management terminal. The remote unit acquires and stores digital data, collectsanalog and digital data signals and controls the actuators. The unit is composed of 3 distinct modules: the Main Module, the Comunications Module and the I/O Module, connected toeach other by a CAN bus. The implemented remote unit has a modular architecture. The minimum system configuration includes the main module and one I/O module. It can be expanded to a full blown set up using a main module one communication module and up to 6 I/O modules.
