Resumo: Organisations and networks are considered key components in understanding the dynamics of production, accumulation, and diffusion of knowledge aimed at innovation. This study aims to examine economic innovation on the basis of a multilevel model, composed of multiple nodes (public and private bodies), connected by uni- or multilateral relations, supported on regional institutional capital (companies, research centres, technological centres, associations, hospitals, among others) and, in this case, backed by public funding. This research focuses on the Porto Metropolitan Area. The aim is to understand what kind of knowledge aimed at economic innovation is produced, who are the main actors and which relational, cognitive and geographic proximities stand out. Furthermore, we intend to identify which technological areas and sectors of application are most active in relational terms and analyse the innovation networks so as to determine pathways towards intelligent specialisation. It is also important to understand which technological areas can potentially be more pollinating or have greater potential for cross-fertilisation. In methodological terms, we will analyse the partnership networks from R&D&I projects funded by the European Union and compiled in the database of the Innovation Agency between 2007 and 2012. All the projects involving institutions located in the PMA (both as lead institution and partner) were identified and analysed, as well as their corresponding networks
