Pinus pinaster Ait. germination and development on different forest substrates, under laboratory conditions

Resumo: Most of studies involving maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) has focused mainly on the post-fire regeneration within different forest conditions. This study had the main goal to utilize diverse forest floor substrates from maritime pine stands of the central coast of Portugal, and within optimal laboratorial conditions observe germinative capacity of P. pinaster seeds, as well as the development and survival of seedlings. From the data analysis made, it was observed a preponderance of germination within substrates of “burnt” and “sand”. Although survival of seedlings presented heterogeneous results among the substrates, it was observed in the “sand” substrate a bigger mortality of seedlings. Development of seedlings was favoured within “Litter” substrate and less favoured within “Moss” substrate, despite transplantation results. Bigger velocity and/or germination rate of seeds, even if not too relevant, as well as competition of seedlings within substrates, didn’t imply less mortality rates, or a greater development of seedlings, being the opposite equally verified.

Este estudo teve como principal objetivo utilizar diversos substratos florestais, provenientes de populações de pinhais do litoral-centro de Portugal, e em condições laboratoriais controladas observar a capacidade germinativa das sementes de P. pinaster, assim como o desenvolvimento e sobrevivência das plântulas geradas. A partir da análise de dados efetuada, observaram-se maiores taxas de germinação em substrato queimado e de areia. Por outro lado, ainda que sobrevivência de plântulas tenha sido observada heterógena entre os vários substratos, foi observado no substrato de areia uma maior mortalidade de plântulas. Já o desenvolvimento das plântulas foi favorecido pelo substrato de “litter” e menos favorecido no substrato de musgo, ainda que resultados tenham variado entre plântulas transplantadas.
