Resumo: The research project contained in the present dissertation aims at establishing a digital multimedia support platform for use by Pediatric Cancer patients, their families and friends. The project was born out of the recognition of a necessity, and its goal is the fulfillment of that need through the construction of a social support platform, namely in areas which are directly or indirectly related to Pediatric Cancer. The aim of this research is to make a significant contribution to the development of new habits of social solidarity, in which the individual becomes an active and decisive factor, in contrast with traditions which are strongly characterised by feelings of impotence and the absence of an ability to involve the average citizen in social projects. The present dissertation analyses the popularity of the internet on an international level, and subsequently focuses on its national (Portuguese) specificities. Likewise, studies on literacy are analysed, thus recognising a link between literacy and internet use. Leading examples of international websites in this field are presented and analysed; the main difficulties faced throughout the length of the project are discussed as well, as are the methodologies applied to overcome these. Methodologies, strategies and options, as well as their application, are thoroughly explained. The internet is an ever-expanding medium of access to information. This project acknowledges digital multimedia as an essential contribution towards the creation and development of efficient information and communication platforms. Aware of the importance of this, several fields of knowledge nowadays require the services of professionals in this area. The establishment of work teams that connect professionals from distinct areas of knowledge is often a key to the success of a given project. Multi-disciplinarity is fast becoming a necessity, not just an added value. This project is an applied research project: the object it presents (the website) is at the centre of the success and validation of this study.
