The popular architecture composes an historic, arquitectonic and cultural heritage, currently facing a fast paced extinction, which results in an irretreievable loss to future generations. Its investigation, recording and disclosure are the simplest ways to raise awareness for its protection. The systematization of information regarding tradicional architecture has been a reccuring theme of work by architects, as well as by several scholars. Further more, in some contexts, it can be verified gaps in its study, being here considered to present an input for the systematiziation of this architecture, focusing mostly on the safeguarding of the heritage of the still existing samples. The object of study was defined as the housing in rural environment, given that it is one of the most remarkable elements of the national landscape, being able to define the regions of the country through its diverse features. Seen that the architecture present is vernacular, the used materials comes from its surroundings. Therefore, the area associated to the valley of the Vouga River arose naturally, seen that throughout its length, its natural characteristic allow the diversity of architectonic and constructive solutions found. The developed study searches in the history of the heritage safekeeping the theoric basis for the definition of its work method, as well as it supports itself on the main experiences of the systematization of vernacular heritage, particularly to popular architecture and rural architecture surveys, in order to define a data gatherings strategy. At last, this work aims to contribute on the characterization and tipification of the way of polular living and building. For that, the work focuses on primary sources of information, through gathering geometric and constructive data, as well as information regarding the valuable elements and the amendments to the study cases.
