Resumo: In this paper, we propose to compare a Brazilian short story The Alienist, by Machado de Assis with a French one Le Docteur Héraclius Gloss, by Guy de Maupassant. Two contemporary writers of the late nineteenth century who have much in common: ironic short stories writers and critics of human nature. The two short stories deal with the subject of madness. The main characters are two scholars who go deep in their research and find themselves in the deepest insanity. We work on the irony, the “hourglass style” narrative and the presence of Hegel’s dialectic in the construction of both short stories. We have as theoretical base the authors: Brunel, Pichois, Rousseau, Candido, Cortázar, among other great scholars.

Dois autores con- temporâneos do fim do século XIX que têm muito em comum: mestres contistas irônicos e críticos da natureza humana. Os dois contos tratam do tema da loucura. As personagens principais são dois eruditos que vão fundo em suas pesquisas e se encontrarão na mais profunda san- dice. Trabalhamos a ironia, a narrativa “estilo ampulheta” e a presença da dialética de Hegel na construção de ambos os contos.
