The explanation could be that a consensual constitution-making process resulted in a constitutional formula accommodating religion and guaranteeing religious freedoms. Alternatively, the constitutional regime of cooperation could result from the diffusion of international norms to national constitutions, in this case, the cosmopolitan law of the church. The article process-traces the constitution drafting processes and finds that the emergence of a constitutional consensus among secularist and constitutional drafters in Spain and Poland was based on the Vatican Council II doctrine and facilitated by the intervention of the Catholic hierarchies. In Portugal, the violent context of the revolution excluded the church, and the constitutional regime of strict separation between church and state was adopted.Instituto Português de Relações Internacionais (IPRI)Departamento de Estudos Políticos (DEPo)RUNResende, Madalena Meyer2018-08-06T22:07:34Z2018-05-082018-05-08T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/article24application/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.1017/S1755048317000311eng1755-0483PURE: 2750925https://www.cambridge.org/core/product/identifier/S1755048317000311/type/journal_articlehttps://doi.org/10.1017/S1755048317000311info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T04:23:27Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/43479Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:31:40.694383Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse
