This thesis makes an historical contextualization of the patrimonial protection of Cape Verde's islands. It's a reflection on the contemporary practices against the cultural traditions, encouraging the debate around the values of continuity and transformation. Recognizing the singularity of traditional architecture, emphasized by the island's isolation, one can consider that this might be an important way of learning and cultural enrichment. Therefore, an analysis of some construction's characteristics, developed within the traditional and vernacular criteria was made, establishing a connexion between the five case studies. These case studies are examples of interventions that represent tourism programs, linked by patrimonial protection actions in a development perspective. The case studies include rehabilitation, renovation, heritage, musealization processes, building traditions and contemporary architecture. The analysis of these projects aims to study the traditional building processes and to see how the modus operandi was revived on the case studies, considered an example and a potential source for the subject's development as well as an affirmation of the identity heritage of Cape Verde architecture.
