Resumo: | Bernardo de Brito follows the mythographic tradition that distinguishes two Hercules in the ancient genealogy of the kings of Spain and Lusitania: the Lybic or Egyptian and the Greek or Theban. He interprets the myth from the standpoint of the social, political and religious processes involved in historic course, so as to magnify the Portuguese past by valuing the archetype of Lusitania in the historiographic record. As a historic and cultural representation of the invaders of the territory, the two versions of the myth tend to be lusitanized since the Lybic Hercules is portrayed as the benefactor and the responsible for the peopling and memory preservation, whereas the Theban is characterized as the argonautic warrior and the liberator. |
