Exibir um império : o colonialismo em exposição durante o Estado Novo

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of colonial propaganda tactics developed during the Portuguese twentieth century, with greater attention on the political period of the Estado Novo regime (1933-1974), in which we can witness an accentuation of Portuguese imperialistic and colonial ideals at the ideological and legislative level. The presence of Portugal in universal exhibitions abroad and their successive organization in the national territory, created a period of high historical-nationalist celebrations that escalated in the 1930s and 1940s, inserting these values onto the Portuguese educational and cultural heritage. This situation brought new debates back to society, with the defence of creating a national museum with a colonial background, which was successively postponed for decades. However, we see that during the 1950s a new museological project was granted between the Overseas Investigation Board and the Overseas Ministry that would proceed the creation of a museum focused on the Portuguese empire and its diverse culture – the Overseas Museum of Ethnology, an institution that preceded the current National Museum of Ethnology. The aim of this body of work is to understand the role of pro-colonial propaganda in the country’s exhibition events during this period, how the regime dictated its popularization in society and how these practices were extrapolated to museological contexts, perpetuating and legitimizing an ideological view of the regime.
