Sãoinúmeros os exemplos de edifícios históricos que se encontram em estado de ruínapelo país, como é o caso do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça, localizado na freguesiado Paião, concelho da Figueira da Foz, distrito de Coimbra.A sua fundação remonta ao século XII, e pertenceu à Ordem de Cister até ao séculoXIX. Durante este período o Mosteiro foi um grande impulsionador do desenvolvimentoda região - a nível religioso, económico, agronómico e demográfico, o que fomentou umsignificativo desenvolvimento da agricultura e povoamento da zona do baixo Mondego.Após a extinção das ordens em Portugal, funcionou como fábrica de descasque esecagem de arroz. Desta data até aos dias de hoje, encontra-se em ruína a aguardaruma intervenção.Dado o estado de ruína atual e a necessidade de uma intervenção urgente, surge aoportunidade de repensar o destino funcional do Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Seiça.Tendo em conta todo o passado histórico, essencial para o desenvolvimento do baixoMondego, e dado o potencial territorial da zona, caracterizado pela floresta intensivae extensiva de eucalipto, propõe-se como programa a instalação de um centro deinvestigação sustentável com o Eucalyptus Globulus como matéria-prima, o Centrode Investigação de Seiça.Deste modo, pretende-se valorizar o património através da sua reutilização funcional,com um programa inovador na sua dimensão científica, e integrado na identidadecultural do lugar de modo a assegurar a sua sustentabilidade ambiental, económicae social.In the panorama of Heritage and its safeguarding, questions arise such as therestoration and conservation of historic buildings, and how to proceed in cases ofruin. There are countless examples of historic buildings that are in a state of ruinthroughout the country, such as the Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça, located atPaião, Figueira da Foz, Coimbra.Its foundation dates back to the 12th century, and it belonged to the CistercianOrder until the 19th century. During this period, the Monastery was a major driverof the region’s development - at a religious, economic, agronomic and demographiclevel, which fostered a significant development of agriculture and settlement in thelower Mondego area. After the extinction of orders in Portugal, it operated as a ricehusking and drying factory. From this date to the present day, it is in ruins awaitingintervention.Given the current state of ruin and the need for urgent intervention, the opportunityarises to rethink the functional fate of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Seiça.
