Resumo: Osório de Castro (1868-1942) was a Portuguese poet known as an example, in Portugal, ofSymbolism, Parnassianism and Decadent Movements, literary currents marked by exoticand anachronistic themes, things out of place or out of time like tigers and ruins, withfrequent allusions to Oriental places. In fact, he worked in India for a certain period wherehe published a book of poems (A Cinza dos Mirtos/ [The Ash of the Myrtles], Panjim/NovaGoa, 1906). where exotic themes are constantly exemplified. However, it seems to us that astrange inversion occurred: in a local context, exotic or anachronistic themes becamecommon, and common themes became, in a certain way, exotic and anachronistic. ToCastro, India emphasized ambiguity: victory is just the other side of defeat, and History hasbeen a Tale. This essay aims to reflect upon the complexity of the literary andphilosophical dialogue between Occident and Orient, considering the singularity ofCastro's poetry.
