To fully understand the dynamics of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) it is necessary to understand the role of personality. The current understanding of which personality characteristics are associated with IPV victimization is, however, far from comprehensive. Given this gap in the literature, our objective was to examine the associations between the dimensions of the psychobiological model of personality and psychopathological symptoms in women who had experienced IPV. Methods. Using a case-control design, a group of women who had experienced IPV and who were living in shelters (n = 50) were compared to a group of control women who had not experienced IPV (n = 50). All women completed the Temperament and Character Inventory–Revised and the Brief Symptom Inventory. Results. Victims of IPV showed significantly higher levels of Harm Avoidance and Self-Transcendence, and lower levels of Reward Dependence and Self-Directedness, than the non-IPV control group. Victims of IPV also reported elevated levels of psychopathological symptoms. Personality dimensions showed a broadly consistent pattern of associations across different psychopathological symptoms. A regression analysis indicated that Novelty Seeking was negatively associated with psychopathological symptoms in victims of IPV, but not significantly associated in non-victims. Conclusions. The study highlights the important role of Harm Avoidance and Self-Directedness for understanding psychopathological symptoms. Novelty Seeking appears to play an important role in the expression of individuals’ experiences of IPV. These results have important implications for research and practice, particularly the development and implementation of interventions.Resumo: Objetivos- Para entender completamente a dinâmica da Violência do Parceiro Íntimo (VPI) é necessário entender o papel da personalidade. A compreensão atual de quais características de personalidade estão associadas à vitimização da VPI está, no entanto, longe de ser abrangente. Dada essa lacuna na literatura, nosso objetivo foi examinar as associações entre as dimensões do modelo psicobiológico da personalidade e os sintomas psicopatológicos em mulheres que sofreram VPI. Métodos - Usando um desenho de caso-controle, um grupo de mulheres que experimentaram IPV e que viviam em abrigos ( n = 50) foram comparados com um grupo de mulheres de controle que não tinham experimentado IPV ( n = 50). Todas as mulheres completaram o Inventário de Temperamento e Personagem - Revisado e o Inventário de Sintomas Breves. Resultados - As vítimas de IPV mostraram níveis significativamente mais altos de prevenção de danos e autotranscendência, e níveis mais baixos de dependência de recompensa e auto-direcionamento, do que o grupo controle não-VPI. Vítimas da VPI também relataram níveis elevados de sintomas psicopatológicos. As dimensões da personalidade mostraram um padrão amplamente consistente de associações entre diferentes sintomas psicopatológicos. Uma análise de regressão indicou que o Novelty Seeking associou-se negativamente a sintomas psicopatológicos em vítimas de VPI, mas não se associou significativamente em não vítimas. Conclusões - O estudo destaca o importante papel da prevenção de danos e auto-direcionamento para a compreensão dos sintomas psicopatológicos. A busca por novidade parece desempenhar um papel importante na expressão das experiências individuais da VPI.
