Nuclearity, the work of bodies and justice: the environmental rehabilitation of the Urgeiriça mines and local protest

Resumo: This article analyses the long cycle of nuclearity in Portugal on the basis of the closing-down process at the Urgeiriça mines and their subsequent environmental rehabilitation. The article addresses the action of the former workers in their claim that they are contaminated, just like the territory, and in their search for the same right to compensation. It shows how the presence and pain of the victims is not of sufficient dimension to alter the technical/political and administrative frameworks. It concludes that the state is managing to shut down the controversy, to a certain extent, and to assume normality in the governance of the territory on the basis of devices of technical and scientific normalisation regarding nuclearity.

El artículo aborda la acción de los ex-trabajadores para reivindicarse como contaminados, así como el territorio y procurando el mismo derecho a la reparación, y muestra como la presencia y el dolor de las víctimas no adquieren la grandeza suficiente para alterar los marcos técnico-políticos y administrativos. Se concluye que el Estado consigue el cierre parcial de la controversia y la asunción de la normalidad en la gobernación del territorio a partir de dispositivos de normalización técnica y científica alrededor de la nuclearidad.Cet article analyse le long cycle de la nucléarité au Portugal à partir du processus de fermeture des mines d’Urgeiriça et de leur conséquente requalification environnementale. L’article aborde l’action des anciensmineurs pour être reconnus en tant que “contaminés”, comme l’a été le territoire, afin d’obtenir un même droit de réparation, tout en démontrant que la présence et la douleur des victimes n’atteignent passuffisamment de grandeur pour modifier les encadrements techniques, politiques et administratifs.
