Universidade de Lisboa / Montpellier SupAgro. Departement biologie - ecologieClimate change is an undeniable reality which is expected to have impacts on the yields and quality of wine grapes. In Mediterranean winegrowing regions, increased temperatures and reduced rainfall are amongst the highest concerns with regard to the impact this will have on the vines. While irrigation is widespread in “New World” regions, it is not as widespread in traditional “Old World” regions. At Domaine Royal de Jarras, a three-year experiment was launched with two main objectives: 1) to develop a decision-making tool to precisely manage irrigation in a context of water use, and 2) to analyse the effect of irrigation on fruit development, composition and wine aromatic profile with a view to increasing wine freshness and regularising yields. Here, the second year of this experiment is discussed. Three levels of irrigation were applied (3mm per dose = “ROUGE”, 2mm per dose = “BLEU”, no irrigation = VERT) on two vineyards (one of 4-year-old vines (ACF3) and one of 11-year-old vines (ACF4)). Watermark® soil probes were put in place in each of the six plots in order to correlate soil potential to weather station readings and stem water potential (Ψstem) readings taken through the season. Berry samples were taken from the three ACF4 plots to assess the effect of irrigation on berry growth and composition, taking measures relating to berry dimensions, sugar, acidity, nitrogen, potassium and anthocyanins. Finally, the grapes from the ACF4 plots were harvested and vinified separately before sensory analysis by a trained panel to measure the effect of irrigation on wine profile. In a particularly hot and dry season, soil potential did not significantly correlate with evapotranspiration (ETP) and Ψstem (multiple linear regression: F (2, 92) = 2.544, p = 0.0841). Unexpectedly, yields were highest in the VERT treatment and lowest in the ROUGE treatment, correlating inversely to the amounts of irrigated water. Berry composition showed some significant differences between treatments, with the ROUGE treatment having lower levels of sugar, slightly higher acidity and higher nitrogen levels in the must. The 2019 sensory analysis was not carried out due to time constraints, however the 2018 sensory analysis suggested that higher irrigation was giving rise to a fresher wine profile. It is concluded that a decision-making tool for irrigation is difficult to develop in sandy soils using soil probes due to the high drainage of the soil and high variability in soil humidity around drippers. Irrigation was not successful in regularising yields, although this may be due to how late in the season irrigation was launched or by differing water table levels between plots. The results suggest that berry composition was improved through irrigation, which will be confirmed once the 2019 sensory analysis has been carried outs.nDeloire, AlainLopes, CarlosRepositório da Universidade de LisboaHare, Thomas20192025-12-01T00:00:00Z2019-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/25401TID:203083644engHare, T. - Assessing berry growth and quality in the context of a study on Grenache Noir irrigation for the production of Rosé wine.
