During the Portuguese discoveries it was distributed around the word, arriving to Portugal as a spice during the XV century. Since then, it has been used in culinary and medicine. The rhizome is the part of the plant that is consumed (fresh, dry, dehydrated, crystallized, infused) in powder formations, pills, capsules, and essential oils. Over 400 components have been found analytically in its constitution, being that the phenols, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol are its main bioactive substances.The main objective of this review was to critically analyze the literature referring to the main therapeutic effects of Zingiber officinale and its main phytochemicals.Through a detailed electronic search on PubMed databases, Cochrane Library, EMA and clinicaltrials.gov websites, articles that have been published in the past decade that complied with the inclusion criteria were selected.Scientific evidence has revealed that ginger has innumerous pharmacological effects with clinical applicability such as antiemetic activity, dyspepsia, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, cardiovascular, hepatoprotection and neuroprotection. Its antimicrobial activity stands out against various types of funguses, parasites, gram positive and negative bacteria that are frequently responsible for infections in ambulatory care. More recently, there has been evidence in its effects towards obesity control due to its thermogenic and anti-adipose action as well as its role as an oncoprotector in various cancer cell lines.Although studies in this area are methodically limited, the evidence gathered in this review demonstrated the great potential in investing in future research about the clinical applicability of Zingiber officinale as an excellent therapeutic agent.O Zingiber officinale (gengibre) é uma planta perene, herbácea da família Zingiberaceae, originária do sudeste asiático. Durante os descobrimentos foi distribuída a nível mundial, chegando a Portugal como especiaria no século XV. Desde então tem sido utilizada na culinária e na medicina. O rizoma é a parte da planta utilizada para consumo (fresco, seco, desidratado, cristalizado, infusão) em formulações em pó, comprimidos, cápsulas e óleo essencial. Analiticamente foram encontrados mais de 400 componentes na sua constituição, sendo os compostos fenólicos, 6-gingerol e 6-shogaol, as principais substâncias bioativas.O objetivo desta revisão foi analisar criticamente a literatura referente aos principais efeitos terapêuticos do Zingiber officinale e dos seus fitoconstituintes maioritários.Através de uma pesquisa eletrónica nas bases de dados PubMed, Cochrane Library, websites da EMA e da clinicaltrials.gov, foram selecionados os artigos que cumpriram os critérios de inclusão publicados na última década.A evidência científica revelou inúmeros efeitos farmacológicos com aplicabilidade clínica do gengibre nomeadamente nas atividades antiemética, dispéptica, analgésica, antioxidante, anti-inflamatória, hipoglicemiante, cardiovascular, hepatoprotetora e neuroprotetora. Salienta-se ainda a capacidade antimicrobiana contra diversos tipos de fungos, parasitas, bactérias gram positivas e negativas responsáveis por frequentes infeções em ambulatório.
