This work seeks to identify the landscape morphology transformation processes and socio-spatial forms in the municipalities that make up the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the Metropolitan East. These processes, also studied by the National Research Network QUAPASEL for more than 40 municipalities in Brazil, are analyzed in methodological terms in two aspects: bibliographic reviews; realization and interpretation of mappings of urban and rural fabrics and public and private open spaces systems. This process enables the application of concepts and processes studied in the literature related to the themes and objects of study. The mappings are based on the experience acquired by the SEL-RJ Group in previous mappings in a GIS environment. In this sense, the application of mapping classes and subclasses, with pre-established categories for the analysis of the land surface cover of the analyzed territories, allows extracting data on the characteristics of fabrics as well as on the distribution and qualification of the open spaces. It is worth noting that the geoprocessing tools used are important tools for planning public policies in the urban and environmental spheres. With this article we seek to highlight the possible developments in the face of the significant framework observed.
