Human aging and the new familiar configurations: The old person as a supplier

Resumo: The current trend of magnifying of the number of people in the age group above of 60 years, known phenomenon as population aging, comes transforming the profile of the Brazilian families. Generally, the aged ones were seen as dependent beings, but, in recent years, this trend is if changing and a new reality is emerging. To understand the changes that are accuring within families and its relationship with aging population, some variables that were part of a qualitative search were analysed and are now brought for discussion in this article. This research has cut out the “elderly maintainer” that through the benefit of social security (retirement and pensions) is the keeper of his family, in a medium-sized city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (...)
