Resumo: Maria José Rocha, born and raised in Preisal village (Fonte Arcada, Penafiel), is one of the last linen cloth weavers using a manual loom. Her excellence and dynamism led us to examine the resilience of the independent making in new social-economic contexts and symbolic systems, the transmission of knowhow within a family, and the adaptability of the pre-industrial crafts and ways of making in the 20th century. We also sum up the progress of the flax/linen activity in Penafiel since its peak at the end of the Modern Age up to its obsolescence in view of the non-industrialization and the market dominance of cotton and synthetic fibers. The consumption of the latter confined the manual linen cloth to a peripheral/exceptional use in handicrafts.
