Resumo: | Reflecting on the relationship between Architecture and City, in the current context, we have found a growing appreciation of the Image, along with the phenomena of consumption, massification and globalization. The field of imagery and of strong, individual and global images has been attracting a greater interest, however, this tendency leads Architecture towards a spectacle and scenography world, governed by the laws of fashion and especially by frailty and superficiality. However, despite the increasing appreciation of Image, Form is recognized as the primordial and essential dimension of Architecture. Indeed, Form has a seminal and structural value regarding Architecture, being inherent its ability to remain, because its meanings do not end or fade like those of Image, but are otherwise in continuous renewal. Given, essentially, these assumptions, this dissertation focuses on the thematic of the interplay between Architecture and City and, to that purpose, it develops an analysis of chosen case studies based on three binomial: Figure/Ground - regarding the role played by Architecture in the City's structure -, Integration/Rupture - referring to the type of relationship established by Architecture with the site - and Form/Image - regarding the prevailing dimension in the relationship of Architecture with the City. This analysis, based on these binomials, wants to recognize and reflect upon the mechanisms used in concrete works of architecture and in solid urban contexts. In the analyze process of the chosen case studies and in the identification of their respective mechanisms of relationship with the City, one recognizes the importance of Image, but without Form losing its primordial character. We verify that there are several possible mechanisms that lead Architecture to perform one of the two possible roles in the City: the Exception or the Rule. This way, Architecture builds the City, in a first pan, based on one of the two mentioned roles, achieved by different mechanisms that have different attitudes towards the three defined binomials. Thus, in order to establish a criterion for classification of the different works regarding the role they play in the City, we established three parameters: Scale, Morphology and Language. Finally, we establish a parallel between Form and Rule: like Form is the primordial and essential dimension of Architecture, the Rule is the basic role in the City. However, neither Architecture nor City exist without the presence of Image or Exceptions, and these, although not essential, perform indispensable functions. |
