Considerações sobre a teoria linguística nas gramáticas latinas de António Pereira de Figueiredo (1752-1753) e Luís António Verney (1758)

This paper analyzes the theoretical characteristics underlying the Novo methodo da grammatica latina, para uso das escholas da Congregação do Oratorio (Lisboa 1752-1753), by the Oratorian António Pereira de Figueiredo, and the Gramatica latina, tratada por um metodo novo, claro e facil (Barcelona [?] 1758), by Luís António Verney, metalinguistic works that constitute the grammatical counterpoint to the manuals for the teaching of the Latin language that were used in the middle of the XVIII century in the Portuguese schools of the Society of Jesus, and that, in a certain way, foreshadow the political-pedagogical decisions that are concretized in the Alvará régio of June 28, 1759, in which the use of the famous"De institutione grammatica libri tres, by the Jesuit Father Manuel Álvares as well as the commentators of the Alvares textbook were prohibited for the teaching of Latin. These metalinguistic works are analyzed internally and compared with each other, determining the points of convergence and divergence. The sources of the grammars, both foreign and national, are also established.
