Resumo: Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. The disease has a broad spectrum of clinical behaviour, ranging from a limited febrile illness to life threatening forms such as endocarditis, with severe multi-organ involvement. In Portugal, Q fever is a notifiable disease but the official data may not accurately reflect its true incidence. This article revises the most important aetiopathology, epidemiology and clinical aspects of the disease, mentioning some of the national series in a way to sensitive physicians about Q fever.

Esta doença caracteriza-se por um amplo espectro de manifestações clínicas, que podem ir desde uma síndroma febril auto limitada até à endocardite e ainda a outros quadros com compromisso orgânico grave, potencialmente fatais. Em Portugal, a doença é de notificação obrigatória, mas defende-se que a sua incidência real possa estar subestimada.
