Resumo: | The foundation of the Hospital Real de Todos os-Santos, in 1492 by D. João II, is related to the idea of the centralization of the power in the royal ty, through a specific political and ideological context. The control by the State of the Public Health politics is one of the corolaries of the idea refered above. The creation of the hospital results fundamentally of that attitude. The purpose of the present work is to describe some factors intending an explanation of the Hospital foundation, through its fitting in the political and cultural realities of the time. |

A criação do Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos, fundado em 1492 por D. João II, integra-se num contexto político-ideológico no qual a ideia de centralização do poder na figura régia é um factor determinante. O domínio do poder assistencial por parte do Estado, é um dos factores imanentes do conceito de centralismo régio. Este constitui uma, a principal de várias razões conducentes à criação daquela grande unidade hospitalar na Lisboa dos finais do século XV.
