Resumo: This paper describes the events occurred between 1929 and 1940 that led to the discoveries of penicillin and sulphamides. The fact that those events contributed to the same end – medical management of infectious diseases – justifi es the title “simultaneous discoveries”. The Author emphasizes the birth of microbiology, the different conceptual models and methodologies, as well as the “chances” that contributed to the final results.
