This work aims to demonstrate how Urban Art can be a vehicle for social transformation. To do so, two specific instances experienced by the author in deprived contexts and communities are put forward, namely the URBANARAMA project, implemented in the Portugal Novo blocks, and activities promoted by AAUTS, an organisation comprised mostly of residents and former residents of the Cova da Moura district. Both situations share an approach based on non-formal education combined with artistic education, choosing urban art as a tool for social change in those contexts. Besides document analysis, participatory action investigation and oral history methodologies were used in the current study, and were instrumental in answering questions relevant to its subject-matter, such as What does Urban Art mean? and How can Urban Art contribute to the positive development and transformation of a given place or community? The work focuses on valuing the artistic and cultural potential of marginalised contexts and their people.
