Oncological Desensitization in Hemato-Oncology and the role of the Nurse: a case study

Associated with the emergence of new therapeutic weapons and the increased survival of cancer patients, there is an increased incidence of adverse reactions to chemotherapy. Hypersensitivity Reaction (HR) is described as an unpredictable and dose-independent adverse drug reaction, and may be classified as mild, moderate, severe, or fatal, according to the patient’s symptomatology. Before HR to antineoplastic drugs, haemato-oncological patients were deprived of the treatment of choice. Currently, Oncological Desensitization (OD) emerges as the therapeutic strategy that allows the re-introduction of the first line of treatment, safely and effectively, which translates into a new hope for these patients. In order to demonstrate the importance of the role of the Nurse in the patient to perform the DO, we present the case of a 22-year-old girl with diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, hypersensitive to an antineoplastic drug and who complied with DO protocol, successfully.
