Resumo: This article examines a work entitled Espejo de Chirurgia, written in 1631 by the surgeon Antonio de Viana, born in La Laguna (Tenerife‐Islas Canarias) in 1578. Even though the treatise was produced in the first half of the 17th century, Viana’s medical training helps explain why its characteristics are typical of Renaissance medical knowledge. The treatise is mainly theoretical and is essentially based on the principle of authority, especially in the works of Galen, and its most striking feature is the abundance of ancient, medieval and modern sources.

Es un tratado principalmente teórico, que se basa fundamentalmente en el principio de autoridad, sobre todo, de la obra de Galeno, y donde la característica másimportante es la abundancia de fuentes antiguas, medievales y modernas, en las que se descubre la cultura médica de este autor.Dans cet article, nous étudions l’œuvre Espejo de Chirurgia, parue en 1631, du chirurgien Antonio de Viana, né à La Lagune (Tenerife, Îles Canaries) en 1578. Bien quʹelle ait été écrite dans la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, la formation médicale de Viana fait que le traité possède les caractéristiques de la médecine de la Renaissance.Cependant, il sʹagit surtout dʹun traité théorique qui s’appuie fondamentalement sur lʹœuvre de Galien, et où lʹabondance de sources antiques, médiévales et de la Renaissance est la plus grande caractéristique.Neste artigo estudamos o trabalho Espejo de Chirurgia realizado em 1631 pelo cirurgião Antonio de Viana, nascido em La Laguna (Tenerife — Ilhas Canárias) em 1578.Apesar de ter sido escrito na primeira metade do século XVII, a formação médica de Viana faz com que o tratado tenha as caraterísticas da medicina do Renascimento.No entanto, é sobretudo um tratado teórico que, fundamentalmente, se baseia no trabalho de Galeno e onde o mais característico é a abundância de fontes antigas, medievais e renascentistas.Universidade de Aveiro2016-01-01info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttps://doi.org/10.34624/agora.v0i18.8125https://doi.org/10.34624/agora.v0i18.8125Ágora.
